Before You Start

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
    Note: If the Blu-ray Disc player starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the Home Screen menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  3. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - System Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select System Information, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.

  6. If the last four digits of the version number are 0214 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

How To Get the Firmware Update

There are two ways to update the Blu-ray Disc player firmware:

  • Update via Internet:
    • The Update via Internet operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Update via Internet method.
    • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable or wireless router.
    • Please see the Update via Internet Instructions section below, for more information.
  • Update via USB Memory:
    • If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source, please use the USB update method.
    • Please see the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section below, for more information.

Update via Internet

The Update via Internet operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Update via Internet method to update the Blu-ray Disc player firmware.

  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
    • WARNING! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
      Note: If you cannot connect the player to your Internet source, please see the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section below for information about firmware update USB options.
    • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is recommended that you have a network speed above 512Kbps to use the Update via Internet to avoid a slow firmware update process.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • Update via Internet Instructions

    WARNING! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.

    Note: The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
    2. Make sure the Blu-ray player is connected to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable or wireless router.
    3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
    4. If there is a disc in the player, please remove the disc.
    5. At the Home Screen menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Software Update and then press the ENTER button.
    6. A New Software Version available message will be prompted. Select OK to proceed with the Update via Internet process.
    7. The message Update to a new software version along with the latest software version is displayed on the television.
    8. Select Start and then press the ENTER button. The first portion of the update process begins.
    9. During the update, the progress bar showing x % and the download capacity are displayed on the television. Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
    10. When completed, the Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself and the second portion of the update will begin.
    11. Again the progress bar showing x % and the download capacity are displayed on the television.
      Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
    12. Once the firmware update is complete, the Blu-ray Disc player automatically powers off and then back on.
      WARNING! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    13. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0214, the firmware update was successful.

  • Update via Internet FAQ

    Q: When running the Update via Internet, the television displays the message, Connection status cannot be confirmed or This device is not connected to network and you cannot perform the firmware update.

    A: There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.

    1. For a wired connection, check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the LAN(100) terminal on the player and to the Internet source.
    2. For a wireless connection, check that the wireless router is powered on and connected to an Internet source.
    3. Check the Blu-ray Disc player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address. Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the Proxy Server input field.
    4. Confirm both the Physical Connection and Internet Access are OK in Network Settings > Network Connection Status.
    5. Follow the Update via Internet Instructions again.

    Q: The power was shut down during the update process.

    A: Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the update process again.

  • Q: The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.

    A: The recommended network speed to perform the Update via Internet is 512Kbps and above.

    If the firmware update process is still not finished, please cancel the process and retry with the Update via USB Memory Instructions.

    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).

    Q: While updating the firmware, Update failed screen appears.

    A: Please perform the following procedure:

    1. Ensure there is no problem with your network connection to the Internet.
    2. At the update failed screen, select OK to try the Update via Internet again or select Cancel to cancel the Update via Internet process.
    3. If the symptom does not improve after trying the Update via Internet again, please download the firmware from the web and perform the Update via USB Memory.
    4. Cancel the Update via Internet process and proceed with Update via USB Memory process.

    Q: The firmware update continues to fail after multiple tries.

    A: Please download the firmware from the web and perform the USB memory update. For more information, please see the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section.

Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device

If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source, please use the USB update method.

  • Important Notes:
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
    • WARNING! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware update:
      • Macintosh OS® X version 10.5 or later
      • Microsoft® Windows® 8 / 8.1
      • Microsoft Windows 7
      • Microsoft Windows Vista®
      • Microsoft Windows XP
    • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • Update via USB Memory Instructions
    1. Download the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file is 132,782,661 bytes.
      1. Right-click the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file, and click Properties.
      2. On the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP Properties screen, verify that the Size: listed is 126 MB (132,782,661 bytes).
        Note: The Size on disk: listed may be different. That is normal.
      3. If the file size is different than the 132,782,661 bytes, please download the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file again.
    3. Extract the update file from the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file.
      • For Mac OS® X operating system:
        1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file.
        2. A new folder will be created called UPDATE.
      • For Microsoft® Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, or Windows 8 / 8.1 operating system:
        1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file, and then click Extract All.
          Note: For Windows 8 / 8.1, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder. To locate the Downloads folder, click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.
        2. At the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders window, click Extract.
        3. A new folder will be created called UPDATE.
      • For Windows XP operating system:
        1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file, and then click Extract All.
        2. At the Extraction Wizard dialog box, click Next.
        3. Click Next.
        4. Click Finish.
        5. A new folder will be created called UPDATE.

      Note: Four files will be extracted: MSB26-FW.BIN and MSB26-FW.ID, MSB26-FW_MB.BIN, and MSB26-FW_MB.ID

    4. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    5. Transfer the update folder to the USB storage device:
      • For Mac OS® X operating system:
        1. Drag and drop UPDATE folder to the root folder of the USB device.
      • For Windows XP operating system:
        1. Go to the directory where the folder was created, and then right-click the UPDATE folder.
        2. From the menu, click Send To..., and then click the drive where your USB drive is located
        3. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.

      Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.

    6. Remove the USB device from your computer.
    7. Please continue to the next section.

Update via USB Memory

  • Update via USB Memory Instructions

    WARNING! Do not power off the player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.

    WARNING! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.

    Note: The software update takes up to five minutes to complete. During the update process, the screen on your television will display progress information, or may be blank. This is normal.

    IMPORTANT: Please do not remove the USB storage device until the update is complete.

    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
    2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
    3. Make sure no other USB devices are connected to Blu-ray Disc player, if there are, please remove it from Blu-ray Disc Player.
    4. Insert the USB storage device containing the update files into USB port located on the front panel of the player.
    5. At the Home Screen menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Software Update, and then press the ENTER button.
    6. A Software Update confirmation will be displayed. Select Update via USB Memory, and then press OK to start the Update via USB Memory procedure.
    7. The message Update to a new software version is prompted and the latest software version is displayed on the television.
    8. Select OK and then press the ENTER button. The first portion of the update process begins.
    9. During the update, the progress bar showing x % is displayed on the television.
      Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
    10. When completed, the Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself and the second portion of the update will begin.
    11. Again the progress bar showing x % is displayed on the television.
      Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
    12. Once the firmware update is complete, the Blu-ray Disc player automatically powers off and then back on.
      WARNING! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may result in your player being unresponsive and requiring repair.
    13. Remove the USB device from the player.
    14. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0214, the firmware update was successful.
  • Update via USB Memory FAQ

    Q: Unable to select Update via USB Memory.

    A: Please perform the following procedure:

    1. Confirm the USB device is properly connected to Blu-ray Disc player.
    2. Confirm the USB device is compatible with the Blu-ray Disc player

    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).

    Q: Caution message There is no update file. displayed

    A: Please make sure the update folder is correctly named UPDATE (with all capital letters) and all the files are included inside the UPDATE folder:

    • MSB26-FW.BIN.
    • MSB26-FW.ID
    • MSB26-FW_MB.BIN
    • MSB26-FW_MB.ID

    Please follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section.

    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).

    Q: Caution message The file is corrupted.

    A: The download may have failed. Please download the UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP file again and follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section.

    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).

    Q: The power was shut down during the update process.

    A: Power on the player and try the update process again.

    Q: The UPDATE_M26R0214.ZIP update file I downloaded from the update web site cannot be extracted.

    A: The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section.

    Q: The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.

    A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
